Background Information: Toge’s wiki link

Personality:
Toge comes across as a calm, distant, aloof individual, especially with his quiet nature and steady stare. Due to his Cursed Speech technique, Toge is not able to communicate normally, which only adds to the distant and quiet aura he tends to exude. He can even be seen as intimidating to some characters, which was the case when Yuuta Okkotsu first met him. However, Toge is actually a very insightful, caring, and kind-hearted individual once one is able to get to know him. He is shown to care for others not so much through his words, but through the actions he performs and what others around him say about him. Because of the power of his Cursed Speech, Toge limits his vocabulary to not only protect himself from potential backlash from his technique, but to protect others from accidentally being cursed by his Cursed Speech. He’s been able to use his Cursed Speech since birth and had accidentally ended up cursing people without intending to, and as a result has taken steps to ensure he doesn’t cause anyone any unwanted pain due to his own abilities. Toge was also able to see the way his new classmate Yuuta had been struggling to control his own cursed energy, and Panda later reveals that he had been thinking of ways to help Yuuta with his struggles since he arrived, which shows his insightfulness and desire to help his fellow classmate. Toge was able to realize that Yuuta also possessed a great power that had the potential to seriously harm those around him, and wanted to do what he could to help.

Though he is a good-natured person who does his best to help, his quiet natured does unfortunately tend to make others misunderstand him. During his first mission with Yuuta, he had initially tried to reach out to the boy, tapping his shoulder and holding a hand up for a high-five, but because Yuuta had been so nervous of both the mission and of Toge’s silence, the other boy didn’t understand until later that Toge had been trying to comfort him. Yuuta later reflects on how Toge had been trying to keep Yuuta safe on a dangerous mission, and even states “Back then, when I was nervous… you were just trying to calm me down, weren’t you?”. When Toge is in his second year and meets Yuuji Itadori, Yuuji also comments on how frightening Toge’s ability is, though is corrected by his classmates Maki Zen’in and Panda, who explain that it’s not as convenient as Yuuji thinks. For his part, Toge isn’t one to go out of his way to dispel these thoughts that others might have of him, and is content to either let his friends do the talking and explaining for him or to simply let others be until they clue in to the meaning of his actions and words. But despite seemingly not caring if others understand his coded speech, he is genuinely happy when others are able to understand him and his unique method of communicating. He will stick by those who he can hold a “conversation” with, such as Panda and Maki, and was even smiling brightly when Yuuta finally gave him a happy high-five. As Panda states, “He’s a great guy, just misunderstood.”

He is also shown to be quite protective and concerned for the well-being of others, even if he has just met them. When Yuuta first transferred to Jujutsu High, Toge had been quickly on the defence against hom because he could sense Rika (the cursed spirit bound to Yuuta at the time) and how strong a cursed energy she gave off, and became wary because of it. But when Toge realized Yuuta’s struggles, he began looking out for him, and went out of his way to protect him during their first mission together. When they were ambushed by a Grade 2 cursed spirit, Toge made sure to keep Yuuta safe, pushing him out of the way of attacks even if he was injured by it and even going so far as to suggest Yuuta remain in hiding so Toge could protect him. When Toge learned of how the Kyoto-branch students were plotting to kill Yuuji during the Kyoto Goodwill Event due to Yuuji being the host of the powerful cursed spirit Sukuna, he expressed a desire to protect Yuuji from being assassinated even though he just met the boy not long before. It’s only when Panda explains that having Toge hunt down and eliminate the event’s cursed spirit would end the Event and protect Yuuji at the same time that he agrees to leave protecting Yuuji to his classmates, rather than take on the task himself. When the Special Grade spirit Hanami appeared during the Goodwill Event to attack the school, Toge battles against the spirit one-on-one for a long time to help keep the others safe, and even uses his Cursed Speech to make both his underclassman Megumi Fushiguro and Kyoto-branch student Noritoshi Kamo run away when they were in danger of being hit by one of Hanami’s attacks. Even when he was reaching his limit and coughing up blood because of it, he still used his Cursed Speech to hold off the Special Grade spirit despite Megumi’s protests due to Toge’s weakened state, showing his determination and how far he would go to ensure his friends and those around him remained safe. This protective nature is extended even to strangers, as during the Shibuya Incident he uses his Cursed Speech to help evacuate civilians and personally watch over them to keep them safe for as long as he could amidst the chaos.

There are also other smaller, subtle actions he does that show other facets of his personality in smaller ways. He has a soft spot for animals, shown by him being good friends with Panda (even willing to feed him meatballs with his chopsticks while Panda rests under the table) and how he takes some time to give Megumi’s Divine Dog shikigami a good pet on the head before dismissing it. In the manga he is also one of the only students shown to be taking care of the school’s garden, and seems to enjoy the quiet task. He also has a bit of a playful side as well, which is shown through his occasional use of peace signs and hand gestures (often used in a cheeky manner), when he dresses up in the girls’s uniforms with Panda and Satoru Gojo as a joke in one of the Jujutsu Stroll shorts, and when he assists with Nobara Kugisaki and Panda’s “falling practice“, which mostly consisted of Panda spinning Nobara around and tossing her in the air.

Overall, Toge Inumaki may seem like a quiet and distant figure, but he has a complex personality that comes out subtly through his actions rather than his speech. Actions definitely speak louder than words with Toge, and though sometimes he may be difficult to understand, those who take the time to get to know him will discover how thoughtful a friend he really can be.

Abilities:
As a Jujutsu Sorcerer, Toge is trained to harness and manipulate Cursed Energy in order to combat cursed spirits. According to Jujutsu High’s ranking system (which ranks sorcerers from Grade 4, which is the lowest, to Grade 1, which is second only to Special Grade sorcerers and spirits), Toge is considered a Semi-Grade 1 Sorcerer, which ranks him as one of the strongest sorcerers among his classmates. He has a large and respectable store of cursed energy, which enables him to use his jujutsu techniques with ease and allows him to go toe-to-toe against cursed spirits that are quite powerful. His jujutsu training has also enabled him to develop high mobility and endurance, traits one needs when combating spirits. While he may not be as fast as some of his classmates, Toge is still quite athletic, which was showcased during the baseball game against the Kyoto-branch students when he was able to take bases and remain a threat to steal. He is also quite intelligent, being both a model student and a sorcerer who is able to handle missions solo.

He possesses the Inumaki clan’s “Snake and Fangs” seal on his mouth and tongue, which enables him to utilize his signature cursed ability: Cursed Speech. Cursed Speech is a powerful inherited technique that uses the power of words to combat curses. By infusing his words with his cursed energy, Toge is able to issue commands to his target and force them to comply with his order. If he tells someone “Don’t move”, they will be immobilized and unable to move. If he tells them “Sleep”, they will fall asleep. If he tells them “Explode”, they will violently explode. The strength of the compulsion is based on the strength of both the user and the target that is focusing on, and can affect multiple targets at once. His ability is such that he can be considered a significant threat to his enemies, as even the Kyoto-branch students were wary of his presence when they were planning their attack on Yuuji.

Though his Cursed Speech is a powerful ability, it does come with some significant drawbacks. While he can use his Cursed Speech on almost any target, using it will cause a strong backlash to occur within Toge’s body. The stronger the command Toge issues, and the stronger the opponent he uses it on, the stronger the backlash on his body. This backlash can result in developing a sudden sore throat that could impede his speech, coughing fits, being rendered unable to speak for a short period of time, or in extreme cases (like during the battle with Hanami) physically collapsing to his knees and coughing up blood. So as a result of this, Toge has to pick and choose what commands he gives to what enemies, and how to use his words carefully; telling an enemy “Don’t Move” and allowing a teammate to attack them while immobilized may be safer and less taxing on him than telling them to “Blast Away” or “Explode”, which could result in him coughing up blood and being unable to use his technique for a while, rendering him vulnerable.

What’s more, since his Snake and Fangs seal is permanently etched onto his mouth and tongue, it is difficult for him to speak normally without imbuing his words with Cursed Speech. As such, he uses a coded vocabulary in order to safely speak with others without the possibility of accidentally cursing them. His vocabulary is made up of riceball ingredients; “salmon” is an affirmation, “bonito flakes” is a disagree, “kelp” is a greeting, and so on. His Cursed Speech is also only affected via talking, and as such other non-verbal means of communication (such as writing, gestures, texting, etc.) remain unaffected by his ability.

Upon entering Songerein, much of Toge’s Cursed Speech will be nerfed. He will still be able to issue harmless commands (Don’t Move, Sleep, Run Away, etc), but anything that causes physical harm will be nerfed. Any and all command compulsions (even harmless ones) will be subject to player permission, and I will be creating a permissions page to allow people to opt out of being affected by Toge’s abilities.

Inventory:
Throat Medicine - Toge will be bringing a few bottles of generic throat medicine with him, which helps to soothe his throat and prolong the number of times he can use his Cursed Speech before he reaches his limit and his throat goes raw.

Suitability & Plans:
Toge would be quite suitable for a setting such as Songerein's. Jujutsu sorcerers on a whole are trained to combat curst spirits and traverse through a curtain (a special barrier set around an area a cursed spirit may be located in order to hide the presence of curses or sorcerers from civilians) or a cursed spirit's domain (a supernatural pocket dimension which has been suited to a spirit's needs) in order to find and exorcise it. With that being said, someone like Toge would be more than adept at travelling through a dreamlike state and combat nightmares, taking them on with the same focus and consideration he would take while hunting down and eliminating cursed spirits. Many sorcerers are able to do missions solo, Toge included, but he understands the value of teamwork and has had plenty of experience working with others in order to reach a specific goal. While he may be limited in his ability to physically talk to others, that does not mean Toge is completely dependent on others to be a good teammate. In addition to his combat prowess and experience traversing supernatural realms, he would also be willing to help with more mundane tasks around the run-down dreamlands and help restore and repair the town. Depending on what was needed Toge would offer his assistance where he could, whether it be a quiet task done on his own or working together with others to complete a bigger project.

As for my plans for Toge, I would love to be able to have him actually interact with others who aren't jujutsu sorcerers. The life of a jujutsu sorcerer is quite a lonely one, and the series makes it clear that most sorcerers only interact with other sorcerers, limiting their contact with "normal" people most of the time since non-sorcerers would just not be able to function safely in a world of curses and monsters. Toge is shown barely interacting with non-sorcerers at all, other than the occasional shopkeeper to buy his throat medicine and when he was helping evacuate civilians during the Shibuya Incident. So having him actually interact with "normal" people would be a new experience for him. It would give him a chance to step a little out of his comfort zone, and reach out to others who he would otherwise not even consider interacting with. And if he's able to find others who are able to look past his limitations and still be friendly with him, then that would just expand his relatively small social circle.

Questions: I am hoping that the nerfs and precautions I've taken for Toge's Cursed Speech are enough, but if further measures are needed please feel free to let me know!
